Visayas, Philippines

hills

The Visayan Islands, also called Visayas or Bisayas, is a group of islands located in central Philippines. The Visayan group consists of seven large and several hundered smaller islands clustered around the Visayan, Samar, and Camotes seas. The seven main islands are Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Negros, Panay, and Samar. These islands and their smaller neighbors make up the central group of the Philippine archipelago.

High mountains characterize most of the Visayan Islands with the exception of Samar and Masbate, which are exceedingly hilly. Panay has extensive easter plains where sugarcane and rice are farmed. Negros has large western plains on which sugarcane is grown. Corn (maize), coconuts, bananas, tobacco, abaca, and root crops also are widely grown and fishing is important in the Visayas.

The visayan island group constitutes an ethnolinguistic region defined by the dominance of the three major Cisayan languages: Cebuano (which is the mother tongue of about one-fifth of the Philippines' population), Hiligaynon, and Waray-Waray. Cebuano speakers  live maily on Cebu, Bohol, eastern Negros, and western Leyte. The Hiligaynon are concentrated on Panay, western Negros, and Masbate, while the Waray-Waray are found maily on Samar and eastern Leyte. While there are several languages, English is the official language spoken in all public offices and throughout the Philippine Islands.

Trip details

Arrive in Manily by February 7, 2018. We will be staying at te Bayleaf Intramurros Hotel in Manila. Located within the historic walled city of Intramuros, The Bayleaf is a 5-minute walk from SM Manila shopping mall. The BAyleaf Intramuros is a 45-minute drive from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It is a 15- minute taxi ride from Robinsons Place MAll. Manila's business district and shopping centers are within 5 miles of the hotel.

Thursday, February 8, 2018- Our travels begin early with a 6 am flight out of Manila to Tagbilaran (TAG). Upon touchdown we will be taken to Oasis Resort to put our stuff away quickly and then to get diving with the Seaquest Dive Center! We have 2 boat dives in the afternoon exploring the Panglao Island. These are reef dives with a maximum depth of 80 feet. Most of the marine life is found at 60 ft or shallower. Dive times are generally 45 minutes.

BeachResort

Friday, February 9, 2018- We head from our hotel room at Oasis Resort and rejoin Seaquest Dive Center for a great day of boat diving. Today we do 3 dives at either Balicasag or Pamilacan Island. Pamilacan Island is a coral island, and fossilized seashells are preserved on the island's rocky hill. The marine realm provides cool sites to see as you spend the day out diving. A BBQ lunch will be provided. These marine reserves provide fantastic wall diving. Depths go beyond 80 feet, however, most of the marine life is at 80 feet and above. Dives are guided and generally about 45 minutes.

Day2

Saturday, February 10, 2018- Today, we travel by publiuc ferry to Dumaguete. After the 2 hour ride, we check into our new hotel, the Hotel Essencia. This hotel is in the city area near the beach, but not too far from the dive center. When we arrive, we'll be able to check in and get ready for our afternoon shore dives in Dauin. This is full on muck diving with almost no corals and mostly sand. There are some cars used as artificial reef at about 80 feet. These hour long dives will make you second guess what you are seeing as what could be a leaf turns out to be a feather star.

Fishies     DiveBoat     Day3

Sunday, February 11, 2018- Boat diving to Apo Island gives us another perspective on one of the world's first marine reserves. It has been protected for over 25 years and the coral gardens are extremely rich and vibrant. It is home to hump head parrotfish, huge schools of jackfish, barracuda, frog fish, sea snakes, leaf scorpoinfish, and nudibranchs of every color of the rainbow.

Day5

Monday, February 12, 2018- The adventure conitnues as we take a van to Sibulan port (about a 20 min drive from Dumaguete). From there, we will take the public ferry to Lilo-An port. Total travel time is 2 hours, but we will be able to chek into either Savedra Beach Bungalows or Sole e Mare Beach Resort and get ready for our afternoon dive. A night dive is possible and the cost is approximately $40.

hotel      Porch

Tuesday, February 13, 2018- Twenty minutes by boat, we will dive on walls around Pescador Island. We will be at a maximum of 80 feet for 45 minutes and can see large schools of sardines as well as a possible whale shark.

 PhilippineDiver

Wednesday, February 14, 2018- A longer travel day where we travel by van to Maya Port in the norhtern part of Cebu Island. From there, we will have a boat waiting for us to bring us to Malapascua. We will stay at either the Hippocampus or Malapascua Legend. Two dives in the afternoon, the first is from the shore and the second dive is at the Lighthouse dive site where we can observe mandarin fish.

PalmTrees     Fish

Thursday, February 15, 2018- Our last dive day should be spectacular! We will start early in the morning for a 30 min boat ride to Monad Shoals while watching the sunrise. Monad Shoal is an underwtaer island that is used as a cleaning station for thresher sharks. Many sharkes travel there for cleaning by wrasse. We'll return to the hotel for breakfst and then prepare for our 2 dives in the afternoon at Gato Island. Gato Island is a sea snake sanctuary with amazing rock formations, caves, and tunnels. Aside from sea snakes, we may also see seahorses, frogfish and white tip sharks.
